Mission Statement

The New York Andalus Ensemble is a performance ensemble housed at the City University of New York. This ensemble is underwritten by a number of different sponsoring institutions, including the Foundation for Iberian Music, the Music Programs at CUNY, the Institute for Sephardic Studies, and the Middle East and Middle Eastern American Center (MEMEAC).

The mission of this ensemble is to bring participants from varied backgrounds together to learn about the rich and varied cultures of the Maghreb and al-Andalus, through musical study and expression. Furthermore, participants are to gain a level of competency and experience with the musical styles so that the ensemble can perform and share this music with diverse audiences.

The musical material of the Maghreb, and by extension al-Andalus, is a perfect reflection of the beauty and plurality of the region’s history. And for this reason we have sponsors with a wide array of interests supporting the ensemble. We do not mean for this ensemble to be watered down, stripped of the musical expressions of the cultural context from whence they come. The ensemble must be musically as well as academically honest.

Religion has always played an integral part of life in this region…for centuries. Therefore, several texts have embedded references to religious ideas – primarily from Islam and Judaism – because it cannot really be separated from the cultural life of the people. This is natural. However, texts that promote a particular religious ideology or modern political agenda will be avoided. In learning these songs, we are not promoting any particular religion or religious agenda. And by extension, we are not promoting any political persuasion or agenda. We want room for what is part of the culture of the region to come through as a learning experience.

We feel very strongly that we want an ensemble comprised of individuals who understand this mission and can appreciate it. We welcome you in learning about the musical traditions of the Maghreb and al-Andalus, and in the opportunity to share this illustrious culture with many people.

L’ensemble Andalou de New York est établi a L’université de la ville de New York ou CUNY. Cet ensemble est sous la tutelle de plusieurs institutions y compris La fondation iberienne de musique, les programmes de musique de CUNY, l’institut des études sephardiques, et le centre de recherché sur le Moyen Orient (MEMEAC).

L’objectif de cet ensemble est de réunir les participants pour apprendre plus sur le riche patrimoine culturel des civilisations du Maghreb et du Moyen Orient, a travers l’expression et l’étude musicales. En même temps, les participants sont appelés a approfondir leur savoir et talent a performer une variété de styles musicaux de façon qu’ils partagent leur connaissance de ce genre de musique avec des audiences diverses.

L’héritage musical du Maghreb et par extension el-Andalus, reflètent la beauté et la pluralité de l’histoire de cette région. Cela justifie la raison pour laquelle cet ensemble a été sponsorisé par cette grande variété d’organisations et de milieux. Nous tenons que cet ensemble demeure authentique et représente étroitement le contexte culturel de son origine. Cet ensemble tient a demeurer honnête a ces origines musicales et académiques.

La religion a toujours joue un rôle important dans la vie de cette région pendant plusieurs siècles. Par conséquent, plusieurs textes réfèrent a des idées religieuses-surtout de l’Islam et le judaïsme-car la encore les textes ne peuvent être sépares de la vie culturelle des habitants. Cela est naturel. Toutefois, nous omettront tout texte promettant une idéologie religieuse particulière ou tout agenda politique moderne. Par extension, nous ne valorisons aucune persuasion politique ou agenda. Nous voulons qu’il y ait de l’espace pour que l’expression culturelle de cette région émerge de cette expérience éducative.

Nous voulons que cet ensemble soit compris d’individus qui croient fortement a notre mission et qui l’apprécient. Nous vous invitons a apprendre sur les musiques traditionnelles du Maghreb et el-andalus, et a partager avec nous cette culture illustrieuse avec d’autres.

تسعى  هذه الفرقة إلى جلب المشاركين من خلفيات متنوعة للتعرف، من خلال دراسة الموسيقة، على التراث الثقافي الغني  في المغرب العربي والأندلس. وعلاوة على ذلك تمكن اعضاءها المشاركين  من إكتساب مستوى من الكفاءة والخبرة في الأنماط الموسيقية لكي تتمكن بدورها، عن طريق أدائها  الموسيقي، أن تمتع  جمهورا متنوعا.

إن الإ رث الموسيقي في المغرب العربي،وبصفة عامة في الأندلس، يعكس جمال المنطقة  وثراء تاريخها. ولهذا السبب  حظيت المجموعة بدعم واسع من طرف منظمات مختلفة  ونحن لا نود أن  نقلل من شأن هذه الفرقة  ونجرد  تعبيراتها الموسيقية من سياقها  الثقافي الاصلي  بل يجب أن يطغى الصدق موسيقيا وكذلك  أكاديميا.

لا يمكن للدين أن يتجزأ من حياة  هذه المنطقة …وكان على  هذا الشأن  لعدة قرون. لذلك تشير عدة نصوص  إلى الأفكار الدينية – في المقام الأول إلى الإسلام واليهودية – إذ هي جزء لا بتجزأ  من الحياة الثقافية لشعب المنطقة. وهذا أمر طبيعي. ومع ذلك، سيتم تجنب النصوص التي تعزز عقيدة دينية معينة أو برامج أعمال سياسية حديثة.

نؤكد أننا لا نقصد من خلال تعلم هذه الأغاني، أن نروج أي دعايات دينية أو برنامجا   معينا. وبالتالي، نحن لا نشجع  الإقناع السياسي أو جدول أعمال ما. نريد مجالا لما هو جزء من ثقافة المنطقة لنكسب من خلالها تجربة للتعلم .

האנסמבל האנדלוסי של ניו יורק הוא אנסמבל ביצועי הממוקם בסיטי יוניברסיטי, ניו יורק. האנסמבל ממומן בעזרת מספר גורמים ממנים הכוללים את הקרן למוזיקה איבירית, התוכניות למוזיקה בסיטי יוניברסיטי, המוסד ללימודים ספרדיים והמרכז למזרח תיכון ולמזרח תיכון אמריקאי (MEMEAC).

המטרה של האנסמבל הוא לקבץ משתתפים ממגוון של רקעים ללמוד ביחד על התרבויות העשירות והמגוונות של המגרב והאנדלוס, דרך לימוד וביטוי מוזיקאלי. בנוסף, משתתפים אמורים להגיע לרמה של מיומנות והתנסות בסגנונות המוזיקה על מנת שהאנסמבל יוכל לבצע ולחלוק במוזיקה זו עם קהלים מגוונים.

החומר המוזיקאלי של המגרב, ובאופן מורחב יותר, באנדלוסיה, הוא השתקפות מושלמת של היופי והרב-גוניות ההיסטורית באזורים הללו. ומסיבה זו יש לנו תומכים שלהם מגוון רחב של תחומי עניין הממנים את הפעילות של האנסמבל. אין אנו רוצים ״לדלל״ את האנסמבל או להפשיטו מהביטוי המוזיקאלי של ההקשר התרבותי שממנו הם באים. האנסמבל צריך להיות בעל יושר וכנות – אקדמי וגם מוזיקאלי.
